Tladi Ladies Forum hosted their heritage celebrations at the Xaba household in Tladi last week Monday.
Aimed at embracing womanhood and celebrating our African cultures, the topics of the day were based on the principles and behaviour of African women.
Dressed in their respective ethnic group’s outfit, each lady spoke about their culture and standard practice for certain cultural activities.
“As ladies, I think it is very important that we guide and enlighten each other because I have noticed that the current generation of young adults and the children that follow them may run the risk of not knowing how things are done in their cultures.
“A typical example of this worrying trend is the fact that there are certain things (such as traditional secrets on how to conduct yourself) that young Xhosa girls are expected to know and keep as a secret, but you would find that girls nowadays either do not know about this or they do not keep such as a secret.
“Sometimes you would find grown adult welcoming the bride into the groom’s home without following the relevant cultural practices.
“Thus we are hosting this event to make sure that we disseminate information that will help retain our culture in the next coming generations of the life we have influenced through these dialogues,” said Snowy Xaba.
In addition to the dialogues, the event also featured the different traditional dances performed by each culture in ceremonies of celebrations.
The ethnic groups represented included the Sotho, Zulu, Xhosa, Sepedi, Setswana and the Tsonga tribe.
