RRL needing more manpower to cover more ground
Help children lead through reading.
The Readers R Leaders (RRL) organisation is looking for extra hands that will assist with the reading in primary schools.
The founder of the organisation, Cyril Turton has focused on reading at primary schools that are situated in Westbury, Newclare and Bosmont.
Last year RRL had a writing competition at Dowling Primary where learners from Grade 3 to 5 were required to write a short story based on a picture which they supplied.
With the writing competition, the organisation provided the semi-finalists with books, the finalists received Leggo sets, and the winner won a mountain bike.
A Grade 3 learner by the name of Chanelle Louw took first place and won herself a mountain bike, followed by Saajidah Mohammed a Grade 5 learner and Jordan Johnson a Grade 4 learner who took third place in the competition.
“It’s important for us to demonstrate that we have success stories in the community. The one way that we can turn our community around from drugs and anti-social activities is to have a highly educated community,” said Turton.
According to Turton, RRL’s purpose is to assist schools in improving their learners English, reading, operating book-clubs, helping school libraries, and arranging motivational talks.
The organisations hope is to work towards cultivating a life-long love of reading and writing. RRL volunteers have reading sessions with learners who find difficulty in reading.
The programme has been successful with learners from three schools in our community. The team is now looking for volunteers to help develop the skills of learners in the primary.
