EPWP patrollers to reduce high crime rates in the community
Langlaagte Police Station recruits Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) to be patrollers.

Over the few months we have been following the different crimes in the area and have learnt where some of the crime hotspots are such as the Riverlea Soccer Grounds, the tunnel going from Zone 1 into Riverlea Extension, the Zone 1 Park, the open field behind the Cricket Grounds, Assegai Street, just to name a few danger areas in the Riverlea community.
Due to the high crime rate in the Langlaagte police’s precinct, the Langlaagte police has found a solution to reducing these issues.
The solution from the police station is to bring in the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) where the police station involves unemployed residents to be patrollers in the areas.

“Station commander Sibanda, Kgabo Sebina (Acting Chief Director of the EPWP) and the sector managers: Sergeant Maluleka (sector 3) Constable Tshangela (sector 1) and Constable Shikwambane (sector 3) have welcomed the team of dedicated men and women that have taken it upon themselves to safeguard our communities within the Langlaagte precinct as they enter into the community patrollers project,” said Constable Phumi Kraai who is the communications officer.
The project is brought to Langlaagte by the Gauteng Department of Infrastructure Development EPWP, working closely with the police and the Department of Community Safety.

“The main objectives of the patrollers are to observe and report any suspicious criminal activities to the police station. To promote vigilance and gather information regarding any criminal activities within their communities,” said Kraai.
These community patrollers have been deployed in Zamimpilo, Riverlea Horshoe, Riverlea proper, Riverlea Extension 3, Riverlea Extension 5-11 and Crown Mines. The Langlaagte police trust that this project will ensure that the communities are safe.
