Taking ownership of our kasi
The idea for the campaign was born after a Facebook request to ascertain which areas in Soweto were in urgent need of a cleanup.

The South African Breweries took time out to make sure that the people who live near the open spaces in Meadowlands enjoy a litter-free environment when they conducted a cleaning campaign after a Facebook request.
A Cleanup campaign is a community-based, environmental initiative that inspires and empowers communities to clean up, fix up and conserve their environment.
MMC of Community Development, Nonhlanhla Sifumba and acting regional director, Salome Ngobeza led the Region D team in Ward 43, Meadowlands, Soweto on the cleanup path.
They were joined by partners, SAB, Waste Group, Pikitup Central camp, JMPD and CRUM staff. The idea was born after a Facebook request to ascertain which areas in Soweto were in urgent need of a cleanup.
The organisers identify the field close to Odendaal Road. Residents threw their support and also assisted in cleaning their environment so that it is conducive and clean for everyone to live in.
Nqobeza further said the A Re Sebetseng is a monthly city-wide cleaning campaign which strives to encourage all of Johannesburg’s residents to take care of the environment.
She said, “The campaign takes place on the third Saturday of every month and in line with the City’s by-laws which aims at addressing issues of littering, illegal dumping, overloading of bins, and dilapidation of open spaces that usually results in the manifestation of pests.”
“We have realised that a safe, clean and healthy environment is everyone’s responsibility. We need to ensure that the environment is safe, clean and healthy, also there is sustainability and promoting environmental awareness.
“Cleanliness restores community pride and eradicates diseases such as cholera and typhoid which thrive in dirty environments. We must change our mindset to one where we all take ownership of our communities,” she said.
