She was recognised as one of the top 25 emerging social innovators across Africa for 2018 and joined 24 other Emerging Social Innovators to represent the African change-making community at the American Express Leadership Academy-Emerging Innovators Bootcamp which happened in New York City, Paris, Mexico City, Nairobi and Dakar for three days intensive training for 125 Rising Social Entrepreneurs and Change Makers to discuss and analyse the best strategies to grow and sustain their social ventures.

A total of 25 innovators gathered at each of the locations to receive expert guidance and peer support and reflect on the inner growth and well-being necessary to be a strong leader.

“Those few days were worth my travel and I loved every aspect of the programme. It was not only profound to listen to the stories of other innovators from 16 countries but it was also empowering. My hope was renewed and my faith was strengthened,” said Mongadi.

During her trip, she said that she saw a growing Africa in everyone and she is proud to have met these young Africans who are changing the narrative of the continent.

“The journey reinforced a lesson and there are challenges one would encounter in building an initiative and creating change, but resilience is the key ingredient,” she said.

Some of the insights shared included building blocks for venture growth, telling your story, understanding money and personalities and how it influences team development. Mongadi was also selected as one of the top 10 Young African Entrepreneurial Minds to represent South Africa in India 2018 at the Startup Bootcamp in Cape Town and was a finalist.

She is the founder of a start-up social enterprise called Um’hambo Core Business and she is chief marketing officer at publishing company Club Readership, which seeks to celebrate African stories and runs a monthly book club.
