Dobsonville Sizwile School for the Deaf learners had a chance to experience a new production by award-winning visual theatre company FTH: K on a visit to their school.
The show is called ‘Measure UP‘ and the main protagonists are Thalia Laric and Bo Tasker.
The costumes were designed by Penny Youngleson, South African Sign Language (SASL) translations were conducted by Jazzhands and the show director is Jayne Batzofin.
Batzofin said, “Measure UP is aimed at Foundation Phase learners and is a playful look at how we celebrate our differences.

” It explores how even in the best of friendships, we measure ourselves and our differences against one another.
“The show brings to life the frustrations and celebrations of young children standing out while also trying to fit in.”

Educator Zandi Gamede said the play is good for their learners because they use sign language to communicate.

“This will help because pupils from our school depend on visual cues for communication.
“We urge them to host such shows annually at our school because our pupils also need such forms of entertainment,” said Gamede.
The show is sponsored by the National Lotteries Commission and the performances were followed by workshops and discussions as well as providing additional resource packs to the schools, including DVDs and a specially developed children’s book to represent the deaf child.
