11-year-old from Doornkop dies after drowning in Dobsonville

Learner's drowning leaves gaping void.

Mayibuye Primary School in Snake Park pupils learnt with shock that a fellow learner, Thabo Motaung (11) died in a drowning accident at the Dobsonville Swimming Pool on November 27.

The school hosted Motaung’s memorial service on November 1 and principal Busisiwe Malinga said they were made aware of the terrible incident by Motaung’s mother on October 29.

Malinga said, “Thabo and his family went on an outing to the swimming pool on the day and the youngster drowned. He was declared dead on the scene.

“He was a Grade 5 pupil at the school and was among the top performers in his class.”

Thabo’s aunt, Mariah Tshabalala said the youngster was also a devoted Kaizer Chiefs supporter and died on the day of the Soweto derby.

She said the family had high hopes for the deceased Motaung who was described as a talented soccer player. Mayibuye Soccer Academy coach Moses Mutana said Thabo played as a front left winger on his team.

“He was the midfielder maestro on the team and played in style similar to Jabu Pule and Thabo Qalinge. He was a disciplined player who was heading for stardom.

“Our plans for next year Danone Cup was centred around Thabo, with him on our side, we were an unstoppable team. His passing left a huge gap which is not easy to replace,” said Mutana.
