"They made us as well as their families proud.”

Carlin Pauls, Hervell Mangena and Yaaseen Choonara are said to be the top matriculants from the Class of 2019 at Coronationville Secondary School.

The Class of 2019 at the school had a pass rate of 89% which dropped from the previous year’s pass rate of 94.3%.

We got to speak to one of the parents of a matriculant; Tyrell Timm. His mother, Janine Timm shared: “my sons’ results are very good, I am very proud of him.

“I need to say thank you to all the teachers and Mr Amod who is the chairperson of the School Governing Body (SGB).

“The schools pass rate is also very good overall and we wish that all the matric learners who did not pass to come back and rewrite their exams. I would also like to say thank you to the Lord for making all of this possible for the youngsters. My son dreams of becoming a police officer so we will take it from there.”

Cllr Khana Amod added: “when I heard that we dropped, first I thought we did not do so well but after evaluating all the schools within the area, looking at their results and also taking into consideration that there have been many issues and social ills in our communities, I also think that from the national result of 81.3% I think we did exceptionally well, I am really proud of these learners. I am satisfied with the results if you think of all the challenges that our community is facing.”

“My heart goes out for those who did not pass but we want them to know that it is not the end, as human beings we make mistakes and the beauty of it is that we can learn from them and better ourselves.”

When the matriculants came to collect their statements, Amod was there to motivate and guide them through the next stages of their lives.

When asked why he felt that it was important to do that, he said: “as an adult and leader in the community, I don’t feel that its okay to just hand out the reports and off that learner goes, I’m sitting with a lot of information which can help direct them in the paths that they want to take.

Yaaseen Choonara who is one of the top learners of the school.

“The learners know that they can always call upon me when they applying for college or university when they are applying for bursaries and so forth.

“The learners took the little that they were given and did the best they could with it. They made us as well as their families proud.”
