How some Sowetans plan to celebrate their mothers in quarantine
Celebrating Mother’s Day during the National Lockdown.
Sunday, 10 May is Mother’s Day. A day where children show their mothers how much they love and appreciate them. But Sunday also marks day 44 of the national lockdown indicating that a lot of plans for Mother’s Day have been put to a complete stop.
Residents of Soweto who have been planning to spend Mother’s Day spoiling their mothers outdoors have explained that it is not a train smash that there is a national lockdown.
They explain that there a lot of other ways to celebrate mothers without having to go outside.
Simphiwe Nkosi stated that she shows her mother appreciation each and everyday and that Mother’s Day is just a cherry on top. “I show my mother appreciation everyday, not just on Mother’s Day.
This lockdown means nothing because I can always make lunch for her on this day.”
The national lockdown has brought some families together for some quality time and also to reduce the stress of the pandemic. Lawrance Mashilo said that his family is planning to have a cozy and intimate day with their mother while spoiling her. “We decides to spend the day at home as a family and show our mother all the love and appreciation she deserves.”
He continued to remind people that mother’s day should not be used as an excuse to leave the house because COVID-19 is still there and is deadly. He encourages people to stay home and keep safe at all times.
Although a lot of people are looking forward to spending the day indoors with their mothers and spoiling them, some are left with heavy hearts as they are far from their mothers and cannot spend the day with them. Tukelo Mofokeng who has to spend the day away from his mother explained that it is frustrating that he has to be far from his parents. “Some of us can’t even go to our parents because we don’t have permits and it is frustrating. But I will make sure that I call her and make sure that she feels loved and appreciated.”
A lot of people are waiting for the day in full force to celebrate as it is one of their best holidays to celebrate, while others choose not to celebrate the day not because they willingly do not want to but because of the situations they face.
Kagiso Makafola explains that he does not celebrate the day because his mother has passed on but he encourages other people to celebrate it. “I don’t celebrate mother’s day because I don’t have a mother. People are now going to be obliged to celebrate the day because of the lockdown. The least they can do is celebrate it.”
