Women chant Sekwanele during a GBV demonstration in Soweto

Dobsonville was identified as one of the GBV hotspots.

Sekwanele (Enough is enough) these are the words uttered by grieving women who find it hard to get answers to Gender-Based Violence (GBV).

These young brave women picketed in areas such as Dobsonville which has been identified as the hotspot area for GBV.

Amongst the attendees was Speaker of COJ Councilor Nonceba Molwele, actor and anti-GBV activist Patrick Shai, and Meadowlands Miss Drug Awareness Thatohatsi Mofokeng.

The demonstration started in Mzimhlophe before moving to Dobsonville Police Station, Dobsonville Extension 3 and 4, Snake Park Police Station, Tshepisong Kwa Boysie, Ematayereni Extension 3 and ended in Snake Park.

Molwele said the areas visited on the day are mostly affected by the second pandemic faced by South Africa.

She urged the young men to be ambassadors of the fight against GBV and l help talk to other men about social ills.

Mofokeng said leaving an abusive relationship starts with the victim because if you are not ready to let go you will not.

“It’s okay to cry, it’s okay to speak about your challenges and seek professional help. I was also in an abusive relationship where my family had to fight for me because I was physically abused,” she said.

All she went through affected her reputation and dignity in the community but she decided to take a step and make a difference. She urged people to build and support each other.
Shai said people who commit such crimes were raised by women and some are women’s siblings or cousins and stated that people always protect the perpetrators. He emphasised that parents should monitor their children.

“We can stop the marches as men, we can stop candle lights, we must make sure that all these beautiful women are there for their children and not create orphans,” he said.

He called on all men to take part in the prevention of GBV and make sure that each and every women is safe in this country.

“May the spirit of those who have passed due to GBV not rest until we have won this battle,” concluded Shai.
