A spoken word against Gender-Based Violence
Artists Adriaan Jacobs and Antonia Jacobs recently released a spoken word piece on Gender-Based Violence (GBV).
Artists Adriaan Jacobs and Antonia Jacobs recently released a spoken word piece on Gender-Based Violence (GBV). According to the Jacobs, the spoken word piece tackles the issue head-on asks men to do better.
“Men are to love, protect, and care for women and children. GBV is a serious problem, period. The only way that GBV will come to an end is to reach out to men and boy children. Some boys grow up to be abusers because of what they’ve been exposed to by their parents or family members,” said Adriaan.
The artist added that he believes that as parents and a community it is their responsibility to ensure that the boy child respects women and other children.

In the interview, Antonia said that there is always a source of where the abuse comes from, and getting to the source is a step in the right direction.
“As a writer, one should always be relevant and speak nothing but the truth even though at times the truth is something not everyone is willing to accept. We shouldn’t just worry about GBV when it’s the 16 Days of Activism. It should be every day that we protect our mothers, sisters, aunts, grannies, daughters, and sons. One child or women losing their lives because of abuse is one too many,” said Antonia.
The couple released the spoken word piece on a website called distrokid.com for all to listen to with the hope that their art will change the mindset of many South Africans.
“It’s easy to say that we all want change, but change starts within. To all men, we are there to build and not destroy our children and women. Let us take this opportunity and ask for forgiveness from all those that we’ve hurt,” concluded Adriaan.
