Soweto’s top netball talent was on display at the Diski Nine9 Netball Easter Tournament held in Protea Glen on Sunday. The tournament received attendance from members of the University of Johannesburg’s Sports department (UJ Sport) and was stretched out over 3 days for the Under 13s, 15s, and 19s, from Friday to Sunday.
JazzDima won the U13s round on Friday before Spectacular took home the U16s trophy the following day. The U19s clashed on Sunday, the final day. In the battle for the winner, the titanic tussle pit the best players at the tournament against each other.
A game that started evenly matched turned on its head when Mighty Blues put the foot on the gas, racking up a 7-point-lead on their opponents and placing the scoreline at 15 – 5 by the interval. In the second quarter, a revived Peace Makers pulled back 10 points to mount a comeback, but could not stop Mighty Blues, who added 9 more points to stretch their lead, ending the match at 21 – 15 to Mighty Blues.

Speaking to Soweto Urban after the match, Mighty Blues’ Goal Shooter, Palesa Matona said she was proud of her teammates.
“I’m very proud, the team played well and we were able to execute our game plan. I am also happy with my performance, although I could have done better. I want to thank UJ Sport for coming to our tournament to see us showcase our talent,” she said.
Peace Makers’ Goal Keeper, Minenhle Soafo (18) said she felt her side lost the game in the first quarter.
“I think we were over-confident and relaxed in the first quarter and that’s when they (Mighty Blues) got most of their points. We tried to get back into it in the second quarter but it just didn’t happen. We learned a lot from the tournament and appreciate the opportunity given to be here,” she said.
Speaking for UJ Sport, SPAR Proteas Netball Captain and UJ Netball Manager, Bongi Msomi said the talent on display was very impressive.
“We were impressed the some of the players, there is a talent. It was important for us to be involved to make sure that these players understand the opportunities available to them, especially the academic side: applying to the university, the entrance requirements. We are also very proud to be able to come here and share that information. Hopefully, we’ll get to see some of these kids at the University soon,” Msomi said.
