Eskom discontinues services in Orlando East until further notice

Eskom employees allegedly attacked while working in the area.

Eskom has reported that its employees were violently attacked and their vehicles damaged by the community as they were disconnecting power for non-payment in Orlando East on Thursday. As a result, the power utility has decided to discontinue services in the area until the safety of employees can be guaranteed.

“The safety of Eskom employees remains a major concern at this stage, and the matter has been reported to the police for further investigation,” said Daphne Mokwena, Senior Manager for Customer Services in Gauteng.

Eskom has also encouraged customers to pay for their electricity consumption to avoid disconnections and failure of transformers as a result of overloaded networks.

“We would like to condemn the violent behaviour and urge our communities to collaborate with Eskom and their respective councilors to deal adequately with electricity-related matters in the Gauteng Operating Unit,” concluded Mokwena.

Orlando East residents have had many clashes with Eskom in recent years due to non-payment. Some residents have rejected the installation of prepaid meters in the area and called for a flat-rate payment system.
