Training for aspiring touch rugby coaches

Midas Sports Development is offering an accredited course for three to six aspiring coaches for ladies’ touch rugby in the greater Eldorado Park community.

“Touch, also known as touch football or touch rugby around the world, is a thrilling sport that allows people of all walks of life to achieve their goals; whether that is the thrill of challenging oneself to compete at their best, the thrill of a fast, skillful and exhilarating sport, the thrill of meeting new people or the thrill of being a part of something that can span a lifetime. It is one of the rare collective sports that girls, boys, women, and men enjoy together and against each other, with our mixed competitions making ‘touch’ very popular for every age category,” explained Zayd Fredericks from Midas Sports Development.

The course typically takes 3-4 hours including a practical component and the basic grassroots training course will be accredited by Touch Here Sports Academy. The grassroots course will be taken by Thando Mathenjwa (SA Men’s Over 30s Coach). Once the grassroots training is complete, the official coaching course will be accredited with the South African Touch Association (SATA). SATA coaching courses are accredited to the Federation of International Touch (FIT).

Fredericks explained that the course trains coaches to support the development of children as individuals through the values of the sport, which are leadership, integrity, professionalism, diversity, and excellence. It provides coaches the opportunity to learn the importance of teamwork and team spirit, and it allows them to develop their communication and social skills. Coaches will be able to develop the athlete’s physical skills such as hand-eye and motor skills and instill the concepts of good fitness routines while maintaining enjoyment.

The training will be held at the Midas Sports Complex behind Eldorado Park Secondary School (Blue School).

“South African women in sports have had incredible success internationally and give aspiring girls scholarship opportunities over and above being able to develop through sport with increased possibilities within Eldorado in available sports codes for girls,” said Fredericks.
