AS-U-R wants to light up Boundary Park Community Garden

The organisation As-U-R Community, Empowerment and Development have successfully cleared the illegal dumping site in Boundary Park, Eldorado Park.

Over the last few months, the Boundary Park Community Garden has been creating awareness of safer, cleaner environments through the clean-up and vegetables being grown.

Mealies, sunflowers, pumpkins, spinach, dhania, parsley, cabbage, lettuce, cauliflower and chillies are just the few crops that are growing in the space.

“We have noticed that the children are very drawn to the garden. The children are always around and we teach them how to water the seedlings and how to plant the seeds,” said Chloe Seedat who is the co-founder of AS-U-R Community, Empowerment and Development.

The co-founder shared that when they are planting, they try to be strategic because most of the ground still needs to be cultivated. Seedat made an example of the mealies and sunflowers that they are growing in the area, and explained that they know that the roots grow very deep. After the harvest, they will uproot it and the deep roots will loosen the ground for them so that the next season they will be able to plant other crop.

The team is focused on using recycled items such as old tyres, the back of the old televisions, old jeans, baths, anything that they can use to start the seedlings in.

McDonald’s recently donated some seeds for the garden as well which the team was very excited to receive.

Since the garden is not being funded, the organisation is also planning on making garden pots out of cement and newspaper. When the sunflowers finally bloom, they will be cut and put into the pots to be sold so that the team can make money to purchase more equipment for the garden.

On Children’s Day which falls on November 6, the organisation along with the community of Extension 8 would like to light up the park as the area is still very dark at night. The organisation will be having a fun day for the children where they plan to have face painting, a colour run, and a creative arts show.

AS-U-R are looking for sponsors who can assist them with flood lights, and wiring to light up the area. If you are interested in assisting the organisation with the flood lights, wiring or the events on the day, you can contact Mirriam Heyes on 067 852 8704 or Chloe Seedat on 065 537 5254.
