Nomsa Mazwai partners with Soweto Saturday Derby and community to tackle environmental issues in Soweto
On Saturday, November 6, the organisation will host the #SowetoSaturdays derby edition which calls residents of Soweto to come out and clean in their favourite team colours.
#FunkItImWalking, a movement which aims to make it safe for women to walk at any time of the day in any condition says that it has identified that a huge contributor to insecurity is failing community and the inability of people to come together to solve the problems in society that they can have an impact on.
As such, they have started an initiative called #SowetoSaturdays which aims to create a new culture in Soweto, encouraging residents of Soweto to wake up on a Saturday morning and do something that is of benefit to the community.
“We are starting with cleaning our communities, clearing all the illegal dumping sites, discouraging littering, empowering residents with knowledge around waste management such as recycling and composting. We are also sharing information to empower residents to be able to report illegal dumping as it happens such that perpetrators of illegal dumping may be brought to account and fined,” says Nomsa Mazwai, founder of the #FunkItImWalking movement.

The Soweto Derby is a landmark event for the community of Soweto, and on every Saturday morning of the Derby, the organisation is committing itself to coming out in their team colours to contribute to the community of Soweto.
“Cleaner communities are safer communities; safer communities have an opportunity to prosper. #FunkItImWalking will be leading 40 cleaning sites across the 40 wards of Soweto. Together with community organisations and businesses associations, we hope our efforts will encourage residents of Soweto to care about their community and continue with #SowetoSaturdays beyond November 6,” says Mazwai.
The activity will kick off at 9am until mid-day. Garbage bags will be provided however, volunteers are encouraged to wear durable shoes, safety gloves and masks in order to ensure their safety while working.
