“We have always been taught that education is key. Knowledge is truly power and we believe that. For these kids, we want to pass that on. Books and reading are one of the elements that we can use to promote that,” he said. The day featured a read-along session led by the Read to Rise, a Non-Profit Organisation (NPO) that is dedicated to helping grow the culture of reading.
In addition to the read-along session, the children were allowed to keep the books as their own. The NPO’s Steve Tsakiris explained why this was an important element. “By letting the learners keep the books we are trying to encourage them to love reading and to read for pleasure. It’s very important to start that culture early and that’s why we work with this age group. We found that most children don’t have books at home. We also want to send a huge thank you to the Chinese Association who made this possible. We are not funded and rely on sponsors so credit to them,” he said.
