A friendly netball tournament in Eldos

Prime Time from Kliptown, Midas Netball from Eldorado Park, Sharks from Freedom Park and the Naturena Netball team all participated in a friendly tournament this past Saturday.

The tournament took place at the Midas Sports Development’s sporting facility with the teams having the following age groups: U13, U15, and U17.

Finley Watson, a sports coordinator in Eldorado Park, organised the netball tournament and he explained that they would like to start a league, so every second week they will be having the friendly netball tournaments.

“Next year we will be hosting the Netball World Cup so it’s important for us at grassroots level to prepare a team to represent Region G and then go further.

“These tournaments are here to get the girls exposed to the sport and for them to brush up on their skills,” said Watson.

The sports coordinator also added that he believes that sports can help the community fight social ills, and said that some children can even make a successful career out of sports if they remain focused and work hard.

“My call is for people to get involved, to sponsor where they can and just invest in our youth. We are in need of funding so that we can host these tournaments and cater to the development of our youth,” he explained.

The tournaments are said to run throughout the winter season at the Midas Sports Development facility behind the Eldorado Park Secondary School (Blue School).
