Hosted by Sanele Vilakazi, a Flourish Franchisee, she heads the Flourish visits that support, celebrate and empower pregnant and new mothers through the critical stages of a child’s development.
Attendees were treated to a memorable, Flourish experience and an interactive session including a breathing technique which is a long term coping mechanism.
She described her work as community activism, adding that she is passionate about mothers and children and committed to supporting them through the critical first 1000 days.
“Flourish is more than just knowledge.
“When a mom joins Flourish, she joins a community.
“Every child has the potential to grow great – to do well in school, to get a good job and to help our nation to grow great too.
“For this to happen, babies need to flourish – to grow and thrive – from even before they are born. And, for babies to flourish, mom’s need to flourish,” she said.
Vilakazi further added that through the Flourish visits she bridges the gap between her community and professional services by making them easily accessible to people in townships.
“Our aim is to empower mothers and mothers-to-be with the best tools and key importance is offering support and ensuring that they are armed with correct information on their motherhood journeys.”
Flourish is a pillar of Grow Great, a national campaign with the bold aim to mobilise South Africa towards achieving zero stunting by 2030.
Stunting is defined as shortness for age and can only be diagnosed by comparing a child’s measurements to standardised growth charts.

The first 1000 days of a child’s life (i.e. from conception to age two) is an opportunity to establish a foundation for children’s academic success, health and general well-being.
However, it is also a period of vulnerability to stunting. In efforts to end the prevalence of stunting, Flourish was born.
