The Nama language leaders

The organisation’s Odette Vries said, “The South African Nama Development Association is on a mission to restore the Nama language and heritage in the Khoi-San communities and it is the only one remaining.”

Their vision is to witness South Africans, especially those from the Nama descent being able to speak, write, read and understand the Nama language.

Nama are an African ethnic group of South Africa, Namibia and Botswana.

“The Nama language is referred to as the Khoi-San language. However that is assuming that languages are the same because they sound the same and people understand each other, that is language distortion,” said Frits Dirksen, Nama language teacher in Namibia.

Language is one of the most important parts of any culture. It is the way by which people communicate with one another and create a sense of community.

In support of the launch, the Pan South African Language Board (PanSALB) stood with the South African Nama Development Association to highlight the importance of protection, promotion and development of languages in SA through various language awareness campaigns.

“It is important that we respect all languages and not rule one to be more superior to others because South African is a multilingual country,” Dirksen concluded.
