Illegal alcohol distillery raided in Protea

Police quickly went to the house and pounced on five men who were fund busy manufacturing illicit liquor.

Protea police arrested five men between the ages of 21 and 36 years old for manufacturing illicit liquor on Agate Street in Protea Glen Ext 40.

The arrest comes after residents in the area alerted the police about suspicious activities happening in one of the houses on Agate Street.

After receiving the information, the police quickly went to the house and pounced on five men who were fund busy manufacturing illicit liquor.

According to Protea Police spokesperson, Sergeant Vincent Mashiteng, upon further searching the premises, police found bottles and other material used to make fake gin and whiskey for some of the biggest brands.

Bottles which were found include 321x 750ml Gordon’s Dry Gin, 36x 750ml Belgravia Gin, 108x 750ml Smirnoff Vodka, 12x 75ml Bells Whiskey, 84x 750ml Johnnie Walker Black/Red Label Whiskey and 12x 750ml Klipdrift Brandy.

They also found 25l plastic containers with a chemical used to make fake alcohol.

“The estimated value of the liquor found is R250 000. The arrest of these criminals shows the effectiveness of the community partnering with the police in the fight against crime in Protea,” said Protea Police Station Commander, Lieutenant Colonel Mkhari.

Residents are encouraged to continue assisting the police with information about any criminal activities happening in their area.
