In the widely circulated picture(s) on social media, the image shows learners in an overcrowded classroom, most of whom were sited on the concrete floor with no school furniture in sight.

The post garnered a lot of comments from social users who called for the Department to intervene and deploy its officials to the school in Soweto.

Responding to Urban News, the Gauteng Department of Education spokesperson, Steve Mabona said that the Department was aware of the issue and were currently working around the clock to resolve the matter.

“The Department is aware of furniture shortages at the said school for Grade 8 learners,” Mabona shared in a statement.

“On the 11th of January 2023 the Department visited the school and additional furniture will be delivered in due course.”

According to the Spokesperson, the issue of furniture shortage at the school was related to high crime and safety challenges around the school. A matter which he said, the SAPS were actively looking into.

“The shortage is as a result of theft of furniture that took place in 2022, subsequently, two theft cases have been opened with the SAPS in this regard,” he noted.

Furthermore, Mabona told the publication that in February 2022, the school had requested furniture of 270 chairs and 190 desks, which he said the department delivered on the requested furniture in April 2022.

He added that the school also purchased 100 chairs in 2022.

He has condemned the stealing of school property and has since called on the community around the school to safeguard the infrastructure.
