The week-long campaign kicked off on February 6 and was wrapped up on Friday last week with a host of activities at the Protea Glen based school.

A march had been scheduled to take place from the school to the mall but was eventually cancelled due to heavy rains.

Despite the bad weather, leaners were not discouraged as they sang and chant slogans against all forms of bullying.

Nomalungelo Machele, acting principal at SPARK Soweto said they acknowledge the fact that they are in South Africa which has a challenge of various forms of bullying including physical and cyberbullying hence the campaign which is in its second year.

“The school has various programmes that we use to teach our learners about controlling their emotions and preventing bullying from taking place.

“But because Spark is a community school, we felt it was important to come together and bring awareness about bullying to the whole community of Protea Glen, hence the planned march to the mall,” explained Machele.

Bullying, no matter in which form has detrimental effects on social and emotional development of children and ending it require

s a collective effort of teachers, parents, learners and all stakeholders involved in the schooling environment.
That was also the case at SPARK Soweto as parents, scholar transport drivers and teachers all came out to be part of the campaign despite the bad weather.

“It is very important for all of us to come together and speak in one voice against bullying. It helps with consistency in terms of the culture of good behaviours even when learners are not at school,” said Machele.

SPARK Soweto has programmes beyond the anti-bullying campaign that seeks to educate and develop even the teachers about good behaviour and the importance of treating each other with dignity and respect.

Machele thanked the learners, parents, teachers and scholar transport drivers for making the campaign a success despite the bad weather.
