Local learners march to Hector Pieterson Memorial

47 years later, learners from Taal-Net Soweto Oasis marched from the Mandela House on Vilakazi Street to the Hector Peterson Memorial on June 15.

The Soweto uprising was a series of demonstrations and protests led by black school children in South Africa under apartheid that began on the morning of June 16, 1976.

47 years later, learners from Taal-Net Soweto Oasis marched from the Mandela House on Vilakazi Street to the Hector Peterson Memorial on June 15, ahead of National Youth Day, in remembrance of June 16, 1976.

Leaners designed posters that they held up during the march with messages of encouragement, remembrance and gratitude to the class of ‘76.

Upon arrival at the Hector Pieterson Memorial, learners held a remembrance service where Kamohelo Mkhaliphi, a Grade 8 learner shared a poem titled Freedom is here.

Botlhale G. Matloga, a Grade 9 leaner shared a spoken word piece titled If only. Learners observed 76 seconds of silence in honour of the individuals who lost their lives during the 1976 Soweto uprising.

‘Mxolisi, a guide at the Soweto memorial gave the learners an in-depth account of the order of events on the day of June 16, 1976.

At the end of the service, learners took a pledge to make use of the freedom of education and responsibility to build a better, safer South Africa.
