WARNING: Johannesburg to expect severe thunderstorms

Heavy rains with thunderstorms could strike Johannesburg and disrupt power systems, so residents are warned to stay safe.

The South Africa Weather Services has issued a yellow level 2 warning of thunderstorms that could cause widespread flooding and disrupt power systems in Johannesburg.

Despite having contingency plans, City Power is still addressing over 5 000 outstanding outage calls from recent flooding.

Heavy rains are expected to continue, making fault detection difficult and delaying repairs because of safety concerns.

The situation might worsen because more severe weather is forecast for the week. Storms might cause equipment failures, flood underground tunnels and damage infrastructure.
