Joburg police recover firearms and apprehend hundreds

From unlicensed firearms to stolen vehicles, Joburg police made major seizures.

The Joburg District multidisciplinary Operation Shanela, with other law enforcement agencies, made a major crackdown on crime to combat crime in the district.

The Joburg District police arrested over 500 suspects and recovered five unlicensed firearms from March 7 to 9.

The operation resulted in 191 suspects being arrested by detectives across the district. Furthermore, the police arrested 65 suspects for various crimes, including possession of unlicensed firearms, possession of drugs, unlicensed liquor sales and armed robbery.

An additional 42 suspects were arrested during high-density operations and 197 during the station commander’s operations.

The police in Eldorado Park arrested five suspects for possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition and recovered five pistols.

The police in Protea Glen recovered two stolen vehicles, including a Toyota Fortuner, a Toyota Spacio and a hijacked VW Polo.

Additionally, 12 suspects were arrested during an operation in Diepsloot for drunk driving.
