Soweto unrest causes road closures at Diepkloof Interchange

Motorists faced delays in Soweto as protest action at Diepkloof Hostel spilled onto major highways, prompting police intervention and road closures.

The JMPD recently responded to a protest action at the Diepkloof Hostel in Soweto.

According to a JMPD spokesperson, Xolani Fitlha protesters blockaded the N12 East / N1 North Highway at the Diepkloof Interchange, as well as Chris Hani Road, using burning tyres and debris.

“We received confirmed reports of two trucks being looted during the early morning disruptions.

JMPD and SAPS Public Order Policing successfully pushed back and contained the protesters within the perimeter of the hostel.

“Officers are maintaining a strong presence in the area to ensure the safety of motorists and to prevent further property damage,” Fitha said.

The preliminary reason cited for the protest relates to ongoing service delivery issues within the Diepkloof Hostel community.

“Motorists are urged to exercise extreme caution when approaching these areas. If possible, please use alternative routes such as the Golden Highway or Rand Show Road.”
