Stolen goods recovered: Man appears in Lenasia court

A suspect appeared in court after being arrested during a hijacking that involved a shootout, foot chase and the recovery of stolen goods worth nearly R500k.

A 32-year-old man appeared in the Lenasia Magistrate’s Court facing multiple charges, including hijacking, kidnapping, attempted murder, possession of a hijacked motor vehicle, stolen property valued at about R475 000 and an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

This follows a hijacking on July 4 in Lenasia Ext 13, where police responded to information about a hijacking in progress.

Upon arrival, officers spotted the identified vehicles and gave chase.

During the pursuit, the hijackers abandoned their vehicles and attempted to flee on foot.

The unlicensed firearm and ammunition recovered during the dramatic shootout with hijackers.

They opened fire on the police while scattering in different directions. One was arrested and taken to the hospital for treatment.

The police recovered an unlicensed firearm, seven live rounds of ammunition and two trucks – one loaded with beds and mattresses, the other with electronic equipment.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the hijackers used a minibus taxi as a getaway vehicle.
The remaining hijackers are still at large, and police investigations are ongoing.
