470 suspects nabbed in Joburg crime blitz

A series of high-density operations, including Operation Shanela 2 and Basadi, saw Joburg police recover weapons and arrest suspects for crimes ranging from drug possession to property damage.

Joburg District police recovered four illegal firearms and ammunition during the operations held across the district from August 22 to 24.

Over 470 suspects were arrested for various crimes during crime-combating interventions in the district.

These interventions included Operation Shanela 2, Station and Vispol Commander’s Operation, Operation Basadi, high-density operations, and ad hoc roadblocks.

During Operation Shanela 2, which was held around Lenasia and surrounding policing precincts, the police, joined by other law enforcement agencies, arrested 97 suspects for crimes ranging from illegal possession of firearms and ammunition, possession of drugs, dealing in liquor without a licence, malicious damage to property, illegal immigration, and theft.

Two handmade firearms, 44 rifle cartridges, 17 unused projectiles, one magazine, and a police cap were also recovered.

A further 224 suspects were arrested by detectives during operations held throughout the district for different crimes, including contact crimes, contact-related crimes, property crimes, and other serious offences.

The arrested suspects will appear at various magistrate’s courts soon.
