Keep burglars at bay: Essential home safety tips for the holidays
Ensure peace of mind during the festive season with Fidelity Services Group’s essential home safety advice.
The Fidelity Services Group advises communities to use a security checklist for a worry-free holiday season.
Charnel Hattingh, the group head of marketing and communications, said, “Criminals are just as excited to see you pack the car and leave.
There’s a lot to consider to ensure your peace of mind during the holidays, and now is the time to start ticking off your checklist,’’ said Hattingh.

What to check before leaving to ensure safety:
• Test your home security systems: Test your alarm, battery backup, electric fencing, outdoor beams, CCTV and fire alarms. Call your 24/7 monitoring service to ensure the security is working and book repairs if anything needs to be fixed;
• Inspect for vulnerabilities: Look for overgrown greenery interfering with electric fencing and spots where intruders could climb over the wall;
• Check lighting: Ensure all outside areas are well-lit and add motion-sensor lights in strategic locations, as nothing deters criminals like being in the spotlight;
• Notify the right people: Tell your security company and a trusted neighbour your travel dates; an extra pair of eyes always helps;
• Consider casual guarding services: A visible guard presence backed by armed response is a strong deterrent;
• Reinforce your perimeter: Assess if you need extra layers like electric fencing or 24/7 surveillance.

• Secure all entry points: Check that all window latches and doors work. Consider modern, stylish alternatives, such as electronic sensors or invisible beams;
• Organise a house or pet sitter: Arrange a house or pet sitter. Dogs are excellent early warning systems. If they are well taken care of, they will remain alert and healthy in your absence.
Hattingh also recommends smart home systems, such as SecureHome. These let you monitor your home remotely from a smartphone, arm or disarm your alarm, check your home’s security status and receive alerts.
With the checklist in hand, you can hit the road this festive season without any worry and know your home is safe and protected.
