Local savings group celebrates women while promoting financial responsibility
Established in 1994, the society continues to empower Soweto residents through unity, accountability, and community upliftment projects.
The SPEKE Society recently celebrated and honoured women with an event held in Orlando West.
The celebration also offered financial advice and encouraged group savings and financial discipline among its members and other attendees.
The organisation was established in 1994 and targets individuals with a regular income who are committed to contributing consistently and upholding the organisation’s constitution and values.

“Over the years, we have faced challenges such as members being unable to continue their contributions for various personal reasons, as well as occasional disagreements among members.
“We resolved these challenges through guidance from our constitution and constructive discussions within our executive committee, ensuring fair and disciplined outcomes that prioritise the collective good of the society,” said the SPEKE Society chairperson, Sydney Mbatha.
Mbatha added that they have 70 active members and are accepting individuals who have a regular income.
“Admission is strictly guided by our constitution and is open only to individuals with a regular income who can make the stipulated weekly or monthly contributions and who are committed to adhering to the rules of discipline within the society.
“Our organisation has positively impacted Soweto by demonstrating financial discipline and the power of collective savings through our consistent 31-year history.

“Beyond financial matters, we actively participate in community upliftment projects, such as donations to organisations to the Orlando Children’s Home, and by hosting events.
We also serve as role models for younger generations by promoting unity, responsibility, and long-term financial planning within the community.”
The SPEKE Society also commemorated Heritage Day, celebrating the diverse cultures within the organisation.
