171 motorists arrested for drunk driving in Johannesburg
The motorists were arrested between May 4 and 10 for driving under the influence of alcohol during intensified JMPD operations across Johannesburg.
The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) arrested 171 motorists for driving under the influence.
According to the JMPD, officers conducted multidisciplinary operations during the week, including roadblocks and specialised patrols across all regions of Johannesburg.
The department said it continues to adopt a zero-tolerance approach towards drunk driving.

“We are encouraged by the continued efforts of our officers who successfully removed 171 impaired drivers from our streets this past week, but the figure remains concerning,” said JMPD Chief of Police, Commissioner Patrick Jaca.
“Driving under the influence is not a mistake. It is a choice that can have fatal consequences. We urge residents to act responsibly and utilise alternative transport if they plan to consume alcohol.”
Jaca added that enforcement operations would remain heightened.
“If you drink and drive in Johannesburg, you will be arrested,” he said.
The JMPD also reminded residents that road safety is a shared responsibility and thanked law-abiding citizens for supporting efforts to make the city safer.
