Doornkop murder case leads to arrest of SAPS member

The 33-year-old suspect subsequently appeared at the Kagiso Magistrate Court on June 08, facing charges of murder.

The 33-year-old suspect subsequently appeared at the Kagiso Magistrate’s Court on June 8, facing charges of murder.

The suspect remains in custody, and internal disciplinary processes have consequently been initiated against him.

According to the preliminary report, police in Doornkop arrested a SAPS officer in connection with a murder case that is under investigation by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate, following the discovery of a body in an open field in Block 6, Doornkop, on May 30.

Johannesburg District corporate communication’s Constable Dakalo Phemula said the investigation revealed that the officer responsible for the case responded to a call regarding a deceased person on May 30.

Phemula said upon arriving at the scene, he allegedly found a young male lying motionless with visible injuries, including wounds to the head and face, bleeding from the nose and a swollen face.
He added that the victim was declared dead at the scene.

“A murder case was subsequently registered at Doornkop SAPS. The investigation was assigned to Sergeant Molefe of the Doornkop Detectives.

“During the investigation, it was established that the deceased had allegedly been in the company of two male friends and that they were involved in the theft of taps from residential properties,” said Phemula.

Phemula stated that the investigating officer traced and interviewed the two men, who stated that they had been caught while stealing taps.

They alleged that they were assaulted by suspects before managing to escape, while the deceased remained behind and was later found dumped in an open space in Block 6, Doornkop.

“The witnesses provided a description of the alleged suspect and subsequently positively identified a SAPS member as being involved in the incident.

“They further alleged that a state vehicle was used to transport and dump the deceased’s body at the open space in Block 6, Doornkop,” explained Phemula.

Phemula added that Sergeant Molefe successfully arrested the suspect and detained him at Doornkop SAPS.

Preliminary profiling reportedly revealed that multiple cases have allegedly been opened against the member.
