Operation Shanela II nets 74 suspects in Soweto
Police and law-enforcement agencies arrested 74 suspects and recovered a 9mm pistol, ammunition and a gambling machine during Operation Shanela II in Soweto.
The Johannesburg District police, together with various law-enforcement agencies conduced a successful multidisciplinary Operation Shanela II across Orlando and Diepkloof precincts in Soweto on September 26.
The operation was conducted in collaboration with JMPD, the Department of Home Affairs, the Department of Community Safety, CPF patrollers, and private security companies.
It was focused on eradicating criminal activities, increasing police visibility and addressing crime, including compliance-related offences in identified hotspots.

The operation led to the arrest of 74 suspects for various offences. 1 suspect was arrested for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, where the police recovered a 9mm pistol and 16 live rounds of ammunition.
3 suspects were arrested for possession of drugs, 5 suspects for selling liquor without a license and 48 illegal immigrants. Police also recovered a gambling machine.
The Acting District Commissioner, Brigadier Egen Moodley, commended all members and other law enforcement agencies for their continued efforts in the fight against crime.
