Locals taught to respect mother nature
The programme was aimed at educating children and the whole community about the importance of taking care of the environment.

Environmentorz hosted a school holiday programme for local children in Eldorado Park last week. The programme was aimed at educating children and the whole community about the importance of taking care of the environment.
The three day programme focused on education and cleaning the area around the Extension 9 swimming pool area and the Klipspruit River.
It kicked off on Tuesday where children were educated about Mother Nature. Representatives from Environmentorz gave children an understanding of who is Mother Nature and how caring and nurturing she is to people.
They also taught them how she can change and give us droughts, floods and hurricanes if we don’t respect and take care of the environment.

Chantelle Taylor from Environmentorz said it was important for their educational campaign to target children because they are able to pass the message to their parents and the whole community.
“Saving water and preventing littering starts with a single person and it’s everyone’s responsibility, including children and adults,” said Taylor.
Teaching them while they are still young is also important because they grow with good habits and will in turn influence future generations.
Through this programme, children are also encouraged to be active and enjoy outdoor activities. Engaging and entertaining dance routines were used to drive the education and the results are already showing.
To wrap up the campaign, they took to the streets for a march to raise awareness about the importance of taking care of the environment.
They prepared their own colourful posters with messages about recycling, saving water and everything about conservation.
Taylor said, “The aim is to make learning about the environment fun and engaging. We also teach them important life and leadership skills through this programme.”
The Environmentorz holiday programme started three years ago and it has received support from the University of Johannesburg.
Hlabirwa Rachuene, a final year Master of Science in Environmental Management student also spent time with the children during last week’s programme. They are currently doing tests to ascertain the amount of pollution in the Klipspruit River.

Taylor thanked As-U-R Community Empowerment and Environmental Awareness, Jungle Working Team, CPF patrollers and University of Johannesburg for supporting the programme.
She said they still need more sponsors to come on board and help them drive environmental education in the community.
