Needs of senior citizens taken care of in Westbury

Their enthusiasm for working with senior citizens, as well as their need to underline the importance of elders, has resulted to the New Jordan House Board to oversee the Jordan House Old Age Home in Westbury.
According to the chairperson of the Board, Philile Vilakazi, they took over the facility in July and found it in a poor condition. In August the team worked tirelessly to begin the renovation process.
“Our goal is to ensure that the old age home serves the elders of the community with a comfortable and healthy environment. Also, we want to make sure that the facility is easily visible and accessible, given its location in an area with inadequate infrastructural upgrades,” said Vilakazi.

The Department of Social Development and Gift of the Givers are some of the stakeholders that have assisted in providing donations and funds to the New Jordan House Board so as to aid with the improvements.
A great number of senior citizens from various backgrounds, including shelters, abusive homes and unhealthy environments have been provided with a safety and secure place to stay.

Elderly programmes have been put in place to provide companionship, social gatherings and recreational activities in an effort to reduce social isolation and improve mental health.
“In addition to making sure that our beneficiaries receive proper care, we also want to demonstrate that seniors are important by creating a welcoming environment,” said Vilakazi.
The institution provides social workers and caregivers who are available around-the-clock, and a doctor who visits once a month.
The New Jordan House Board is appealing for more financial contributions from anyone who can help, as there is still a big need for support because the renovations are still not finished.
