Achieva Exchange Market Day held at Maponya Mall

Over the weekend, Standard Bank hosted Achieva Exchange Market Day at Maponya Mall.

A wholesome day aimed at redefining the way individuals celebrate personal milestones.

The multifaced event opened its gates for the community of Pimville and surrounding areas, mostly young people, under the theme ‘First Job’. The market catered for the needs of those individuals who are embarking on their first job journey.

The event offered meaningful a contribution that will assist young people with a proper dress code on their first month of employment.

Motlatsi Mkalala, Head of Middle Market at Standard Bank said, “Achieva Exchange is a market where we have asked people in Gauteng to donate clothes, shoes, bags and accessories that can help people who are starting their first job.”

While people were shopping in preparation for their first job, Achieva Exchange conducted an informative masterclass that educated the community about the importance of preparing for work.

Phephile Simelane, CEO of Nabantu was the one facilitating the first job preparation masterclass. She spoke about the factors that contribute to being employed and being ready for the workplace environment.

“These masterclasses are to help young people get through the door like how to structure your CV through acquiring soft skills from being a volunteer in your community or at church. It is important to build your brand,” said Simelane.

Soft skills are important non-technical skills that describe how you work and interact with others. The masterclass emphasised on the importance of building relationships and character because your brand is made up of spaces you exist in.

Lihle Nkosi from Pimville was one of the young people that attended the masterclasses and experienced the Achieva Exchange Market.

What stood out for her from the job preparation class was the topic of saving money, which is something that most people struggle with.

“Today’s lesson was informative and I have learnt the importance of saving money. I need to start looking and tracking my spending history and start building a budget. I have also learnt that my social media post should align with the values of my future employer,” said Nkosi.

Achieva exchange market day making life easier for people embarking on their first job journey

First job stories are quite difficult and most people did not have appropriate clothes for the whole month. This can reduce the confidence of believing in yourself and the ability to keep going.

Simelane concluded by encouraging young people to be believe in themselves and that they actually deserve the best.

“Stay prepared, do not give up and do not underplay what you are doing in your community. Remember that opportunities favour the prepared.”
