WATCH: Taxi drivers clash with e-hailing operators in Maponya Mall

Police investigate cases of attempted murder and damage to property.

Taxi drivers had an altercation with the e hailing operators at Maponya Mall on Thursday night.

It has been reported that about four vehicles where damaged and three of them were set ablaze.

According to a statement from the SAPS’ Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi , “It is reported that on the evening of 01 June 2023, minibus taxi drivers allegedly attacked e-hailing drivers.

“Three vehicles were torched and the owners were assaulted and one of them shot. All three victims were taken to a local hospital.”

The police said the identities of the victims were unknown at this stage and no arrests had been made.

It is suspected that the clash is over commuters at the mall.

“There were people who were requesting for Uber rides next to Pick n Pay entrance.

“But when the pick up was supposed to happen, people came in and took the driver out hitting him and then they started setting the car alight,” said Nana Nonkeleya, one of the residents who were as at the scene on Thursday night.

It is suspected that taxi drivers are not allowing e hailing drivers to operate inside the mall.

Dumisani Dlamini, a community leader said, “This is one organisation that can’t stand competition.I mean everyone has a right to use any mode of transportation that they prefer.

“A person chooses which one will work best for them without being obligated to choose the other.”

All stakeholders involved were expected to have a meeting on Friday to find a way forward and prevent further violence.
