Soweto paddlers ride the waves

The race involved the use of motorboats to make waves and paddlers feel like they were surfing in the ocean.

A large number of paddlers from the Soweto Canoe and Recreation Club recently participated in the World’s only High Altitude Surf Ski race which was hosted at Emmarentia Dam.

Bambo Fanteni was one of the participants who enjoyed the dress up opportunity as some were pirates and others dancing girls.

Fanteni finished in a good time just under one hour, although the majority of participants were not racing seriously but enjoying the social side of the fun event.

Bradley Fisher, CEO of Adreach who has been supporting and sponsoring the Soweto Canoe and Recreation Club since its formation, partnered with Simnikwe Ndontini from Soweto to finish in position nine at a time of 47:50.

Siseko Ntondini who proved to be one of the top racing paddlers in Gauteng and made history when he won the Dusi, partnered with Piers Cruikshanks.

He finished the race in second position as a single Kayak in a time of 49:00.

One of the founding members of the Soweto Canoe and Recreation Club, Ryno Armdorff partnered with Josh Loots to enjoy the event, finishing in approximately 53 minutes.

Other participants from Soweto included Olwethu Duna, who rounded the buoy as Ryno approached.
