Eldorado Park Flats to get a much-needed facelift

Gauteng MEC for Human Settlements vows to address Eldorado Park Flats' maintenance woes.

Gauteng MEC for Human Settlements, Tasneem Motara, conducted a site visit inspection at the Eldorado Park Flats on October 30, pledging to tackle the long-standing maintenance issues plaguing the area.

Residents expressed concerns about the condition of the flats, citing leaky roofs, broken sewage systems, and electrical issues.

The crowd is filled with determined faces, all sharing a common goal – to bring positive change to their community.

Many have been waiting for years to receive title deeds, fearing that the department’s inaction would lead to further deterioration.

Motara took responsibility for the department’s lack of maintenance and vowed to refurbish and repair Eldorado Park Flats.

“We have to correct the municipal account between ourselves and the City of Joburg. Part of doing that means we have to install prepaid meters in all the units.

“We must put prepaid meters, and as I said, for us to put in the prepaid meters, we also need to resolve historic issues that we have with the municipality related to Berlin,” she said.

Motara acknowledged the department’s responsibility and outlined plans to refurbish and renovate the flats incrementally, prioritizing the most desperate cases.

“This includes installing prepaid electricity meters, resolving historic issues with the municipality and working with the municipality to replace or upgrade external services, such as sewer and water lines.”

Residents remain hopeful that their concerns will finally be addressed.

“Our children’s future is being stifled by these poor living conditions. We need change, and we need it now,” said Arthur Wilson, project steering committee chairperson.

During the meeting residents voiced that they are willing to pay for services; however, they must be able to benefit from those services.

“We appreciate the MEC’s commitment, but we need to see action,” said another resident. “We have been patient for too long, and it’s time for change.”
