Road safety campaign hits the streets in Protea

The road safety awareness was held in a form of a roadblock, different cars passing at impala freeway were being monitored, illegal activities were being checked and road safety was ensured.

Community stakeholders held a road safety awareness campaign for local drivers at Impala Road, Protea Glen, on November 1.

The campaign in the form of a roadblock saw cars monitored, illegal activities checked and road safety ensured.

Road safety officer, Noluthando Mgoma, said that when it comes to the number of road deaths and car accidents, Gauteng has the highest rate.

“We urge the community to prioritize safety, particularly on the roads. With the December holidays approaching and schools closing, we want parents to keep an eye on their kids for their own safety.

“We are also urging those who own cars to drive carefully, to abstain from alcohol while driving, and to take care of one another,’’ she said.

Protea CPF PRO, Trudy Jabavu, said in addition to focusing on road safety, the campaign will also prioritise community safety, which typically includes rape, crime, and other unlawful activities.

“We made the decision to work together with various stakeholders to safeguard the community and educate people about their safety. We also want to protect our children, particularly from GBV, and we want to be parents to every child while also serving as a community safety guard,’’ she said.

Issues identified included individuals operating vehicles without a licence, vehicles operating without the correct licence disks, cars that were overloaded, and non-compliant driving.

“We also used the opportunity to say no to drug and sexual abuse. We are also making a stand against drinking and driving. People must be safe at all costs,’’ said the general secretary of Greater Johannesburg Learner Transport Organisation, Sibongile Maseko.
