Man gets life sentence at Protea Magistrate Court for rape

The sentence comes after Sibulelo Mxiki raped of a 33-year-old woman in her home.

A breach of trust has led to a life imprisonment sentence for Sibulelo Mxiki, a 40-year-old man who raped a 33-year-old family friend.

The Protea Magistrates’ Court handed down the sentence on November 27.

According to the testimony, the victim visited Mxiki’s home on December 26, 2021, to greet his mother.

Mxiki then accompanied the victim to her residence, where he threatened her with a rock, took her keys, and subjected her to repeated sexual intercourse.

Investigations revealed that Mxiki was on parole for a previous conviction of housebreaking and rape, for which he received a 10-year sentence in July 2016.

Regional court prosecutor Sanele Ndevu emphasised that Mxiki’s actions grossly violated the victim’s trust and that he was a repeat offender.

Phindi Mjonondwane, Gauteng regional NPA spokesperson, condemned the crime, stating the rape of women and children by those close to them is indicative of moral decay in our society.

Mjonondwane assured the NPA, in collaboration with law enforcement partners, will continue its work to ensure that perpetrators are held accountable.
