16 Days of Activism commemorated in Protea Glen
The event's purpose was to increase community wellness, raise awareness of gender-based violence (GBV), and foster open communication on intergenerational issues.
In commemoration of the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children campaign, COPESSA hosted a powerful event on November 4 at COPPESA Park, Protea Glen.
The event purposed to increase community wellness, raise awareness of gender-based violence (GBV), and foster open communication on intergenerational issues through activities like aerobics, a walk and facilitate dialogue.
Speaking with Urban News, the monitoring and evaluation lead at COPESSA, Sinawo Mgijimi said because GBV is still so common in the community, COPESSA felt compelled to hold the event that fights GBV.

“As members of the community, we must address the root causes of ignorance, toxic masculinity, and inequality.
“We must foster empathy and work together to address these urgent societal issues. We have to close gaps between various groups and genders,” she said.
Mgijimi stated the event encouraged healthy lifestyle behaviours, created a sense of community solidarity and involvement, and generated important conversations about creating a safer and more inclusive society.
It also equipped participants with the knowledge and resources they needed to confront GBV and related societal concerns.

“Taking part in such events encourages group action, challenges detrimental conventions, and increases awareness.
“It unites the community to address common issues, provides information, and exemplifies the strength of unity in preventing GBV and advancing social justice, therefore, it is important for the community to take part in such events,” said Mgijimi.
