Tips for first-time drivers this holiday season

Many young South Africans are gearing up for their first road trip this first festive season.

To ensure a safe and enjoyable journey, the Retail Motor Industry Organisation (RMI) is sharing essential tips for first-time drivers.

Before embarking on their trip, drivers are advised to get their vehicle checked at an RMI-accredited workshop or vehicle testing centre.

This critical safety check focuses on vital components such as tyres, brakes, and windscreen wipers.

In the event of an accident or breakdown, the RMI and the South African Motor Body Repairers Association (SAMBRA) offer the following guidance:

• In case of an accident, remain calm, switch on hazard lights, and assess the surroundings. Check for injuries, take photos of the accident scene, and wait for authorities to arrive.
• Report the accident to the police within 24 hours and notify your insurer.
• Collect details from all parties involved, including names, ID numbers, and contact information.

In case of a breakdown, move your car to a safe location, turn on hazard lights, and place a warning triangle behind your vehicle. Call for roadside assistance or contact the nearest accredited RMI member for professional help.

The RMI also reminds motorists that minor crashes can be reported online through the NaTIS website, generating a Crash Report Number (CRN) for insurance purposes.

“We want to ensure that young drivers feel prepared and supported during their first road trip,” said Ipeleng Mabusela, RMI CEO, strategy and corporate support.
