CoJ urges residents to be cautious after New Canada drowning

Local parents have been advised to make use of local swimming pools, found in all seven Regions of Johannesburg.

The City of Johannesburg Emergency Management Services has urged residents to safeguard children and make sure they do not swim in abandoned mines, dams, rivers or lakes.

This comes after an 18-year-old drowned in New Canada on Saturday, January 25.

Local parents have been advised to make use of local swimming pools in all seven Regions of Johannesburg.

Xolile Khumalo, Media Liaison Officer for Johannesburg EMS said those who have properties near river banks are cautioned to be vigilant during rainy days and refrain from crossing flooded rivers.

“This impetuous action leads to victims being carried away by flash floods. An urgent message also goes out to all religious groups who perform baptism ceremonies in rivers.

“Precautionary steps should be employed to avert dangers that streams and rivers pose, especially during the rainy season.

“Preventive actions must be applied to prevent unnecessary loss of life,” Khumalo warned.
