Minister of Justice condemns the killing of the witness in Eldos murder case
The Department of Justice has condemned the fatal shooting outside the Lenasia Magistrate’s Court.
The Department of Justice and Constitutional Development has condemned the murder of a 27-year-old witness outside the Lenasia Magistrate’s Court on January 21.
The shooting happened just meters from the court’s entrance as the witness, accompanied by a family member, was preparing to testify in a murder trial.
In a strongly worded statement, minister of Justice and Constitutional Development Mamoloko Kubayi denounced the attack, calling it a direct affront to justice and the rule of law.

“The safety of all court users is of the utmost priority. The security breach violates the core of our court administration system. We expect the courts to be the custodians of justice and a safe place for our citizens,” said Kubayi.
Kubayi confirmed that immediate steps to bolster security at the court, particularly for high-risk cases, are underway.
“In less than 24 hours, the department, in collaboration with the National Prosecuting Authority and the SAPS, will implement enhanced security measures.
“These include an integrated security plan and a comprehensive threat and risk assessment to protect witnesses and court officials. These measures will ensure that public safety and security at the court are urgently restored.”
The minister thanked law enforcement for their swift response, which helped prevent further harm to citizens on the premises. While court operations have resumed, psychological support is available to staff affected by the event..
The department called on the public to assist the SAPS with any information that could lead to the arrest and prosecution of those responsible.

Kubayi emphasised that protecting SA’s justice system is a collective responsibility, “Together, we must uphold the rule of law and resolve disputes within the framework of the constitution.”
The department reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring courts remain a safe space for citizens seeking justice and vowed to continue working with the relevant stakeholders to address the security challenges.
