Gauteng MEC offers condolences after learner dies in school match

Grade 12 learner dies after collision during match at Boksburg school.

Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane has extended condolences to the family of a Krugersdorp High School Grade 12 learner who died following an incident in a cricket match in Boksburg on February 1.

According to reports, the incident occurred during a cricket match between Krugersdorp High School (KHS) and Christian Brothers’ College.

The Gauteng Education Department said that while fielding, two KHS players collided as they attempted to intercept a ball struck into the outfield.

One of the learners lost consciousness, while the second was experiencing difficulty breathing.

Emergency medical personnel, who were on duty, immediately attended to the injured learner.

He was rushed to Sunward Park Netcare Hospital and certified dead upon arrival after it seemed he suffered cardiac arrest.

“We are devastated by the tragic passing of this young sportsman. Losing a learner in such circumstances is deeply painful, and we extend our sympathies to his family, friends, and the entire school community.

“We call for strength and comfort for all those affected during this difficult time,” said MEC Chiloane.
