Diepkloof home catches fire during power outage

The fire broke out after a candle fell on a blanket at a home in Diepkloof Zone 2.

A house burnt down in Diepkloof Zone 2 on Hlophekhulu Street after a candle in a bedroom fell on a blanket during load reduction on February 4 at about 18:30.

Speaker of council Nobuhle Mthembu conducted an oversight of the house and donated school shoes and blankets to the family.

“I called for help. That is when people came out in numbers, trying to extinguish the fire. Unfortunately, when all this was over, nothing could be saved. We lost everything.’’

Mthembu said, “We received news from councillor Mashinini about a house that burnt down internally.

“As the legislature, we are here for an oversight. We saw it fit to donate school shoes to the children because we are on the back-to-school campaign and some blankets from our donors.’’

She said public safety and the EMS are to inspect and evaluate the house to see if it was safe to get fixed or if the structure was affected. She said they would contact donors for help.
