Locals take part in a cookoff

HelloPay is a card-acquiring company offering businesses card devices to help them with card purchases and payments.

The Dijo Master cookoff, powered by HelloPay, took place at the Maponya Mall, Soweto, on February 15.

With prizes totalling R45 000, the competition empowers businesses in Soweto by letting them showcase their culinary talents

This brings empowerment in digital times and is safe because no businesses need cash.

The contestants had to impress the judges – Nick Hamman, the host of 5Breakfast on 5FM and Jozi FM presenter Refiloe Motsei.

HelloPay GM Zunaid Miya said, “We are letting businesses that use our devices showcase their talents.

This also highlights our brand and demonstrates what we do for our local communities.

This is to grow our footprint in the communities because we are about uplifting communities while working with them.

“After all, most businesses using our devices are shisanyamas and people selling food in the townships.”

Eateries like Kota King, Woods and Wings and Crub Worx competed. Families and communities came out in numbers to support the cookoff.

The contestants received ingredients that included three proteins – chicken, boerewors and chuck – and later boxes with secret ingredients to incorporate into their dishes.

The contestants were challenged – from making kasi food like kotas and dagwoods to cooking soulful meals that blew the judges away.

The first prize was R30 000, the second was R10 000, and the third was R5 000. All the businesses received business support and profiling.

Judge Refiloe Motsei shared her passion with local businesses and was glad HelloPay came up with the idea.

“Shoutout to HelloPay for this. Not only does it expose the businesses, but it is a convenient way to run your business. It is safe, secure and convenient. I hope whoever wins uses the money wisely towards their businesses.’’

EatSA Delicious foods came first, second was Woods and Wings, and third was Kota King.

Jessica Norman of EatSA Delicious shared her happiness and said she plans to get a container to expand the business.

“I am beyond grateful for this opportunity. I know we are good, but I did not know we were this good. This money will come in handy. Thank you, HelloPay.’’

Attendees indulged in meals prepared by the various franchises.
