Joburg Speaker raises concerns on safety of councillors
Joburg speaker Nobuhle Mthebu said her office will engage further with the Councillor Affairs Directorate to ensure that local councillors are safe within the communities they serve.
The Joburh speaker of council Nobuhle Mthembu, expressed concern about the safety of councillors following the killing of Zakhele Mathe on February 17.
Mathe was gunned down on February 17 at his home in Naturena and laid to rest in West Park Cemetery.
“The tragic loss of Mathe highlights the urgent need for proactive measures to protect those who serve our communities.

“Council and our law enforcement should prioritise the safety of councillors, and take immediate steps to prevent further violence against public representatives,” said Mthembu.
She added her office will engage with the Councillor Affairs Directorate to expedite the finalisation of the Councillor Safety Policy in collaboration with all relevant stakeholders and law enforcement.

“Having a safety policy will ensure the city takes a proactive stance in safeguarding councillors, rather than reacting only after a tragedy.
“The speaker’s office remains committed to working with law enforcement agencies and other stakeholders to create a safer environment for councillors to carry out their duties without fear.”
